401(k) Calculator

Project how your 401(k) grows with your contributions, employer match, and compound returns.

How to use it

Enter your balance, salary, and the percentages you and your employer contribute. The calculator grows your account year by year — contributions rise with your salary — and shows how much of the final balance is money you put in versus growth and the employer match.

Never leave match on the table

An employer match is an instant 100% return on that part of your pay. If your plan matches 50% or 100% of the first few percent you contribute, contributing at least enough to earn the full match is the single highest-value move in retirement saving — before almost any other investment decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What return should I assume?

US stock-heavy portfolios have historically averaged around 7% per year after inflation over long periods. Use 5–6% for a more conservative, mixed portfolio.

What is the 401(k) contribution limit?

For 2026, employees under 50 can contribute up to $24,500 (the IRS adjusts this most years), plus catch-up contributions at 50+. This calculator does not cap contributions, so keep your percentage within the legal limit.
